Alfabetização nos Maktabs
Temos várias descrições do maktab da Ásia Central, embora a maioria delas sejam visões hostis de forasteiros. Felizmente, nos escritos de Sadriddin Ayni (1878-1954), possuímos uma fonte única sobre o maktab e a madrasah como existiam neste período. Após o alfabeto, a criança começava com o Haftyak, uma compilação de versos selecionados do Quran, começando com as suwar mais curtas, geralmente localizadas no final. Essas também eram memorizadas. A criança era, portanto, familiarizada com o alfabeto ao mesmo tempo em que iniciava o processo de memorização de textos-chave. Claro, o Quran era ensinado em árabe, sem nenhuma tradução fornecida e nenhuma tentativa de explicação. A habilidade de ler e escrever (e as duas eram habilidades diferentes, adquiridas separadamente) era necessária para apenas algumas esferas de esforço, enquanto vastas esferas da vida permaneciam intocadas pela escrita.
